Fortnum’s x Heinz

PACKAGING DESIGN / ILLUSTRATION / GRAPHIC DESIGN

In 1886 Henry Heinz came over the pond with five cases of his newly patented tinned products. His first stop was of course Fortnum’s – and after tasting the samples, the grocery buyer pronounced, “I think, Mr Heinz, we’ll take the lot!”. In February 2020, for ‘ValenHeinz’ Day, the love affair continued, with the conception of Tomato Ketchup Truffles.

I was asked to design a premium and covetable pack for this controversial confection, combining the branding of both Fortnum’s and Heinz, with signifiers of the tomato ketchup flavouring, whilst paying homage to the romance of traditional valentines gifting. Through a combination of clashing block colours, bold use of branding and a bespoke, hand-rendered filigree pattern, we produced an eye-catching limited-edition Valentine’s Day gift, which sat beautifully in the Fortnum and Mason store.
